Start by cooking the shell-on edamame in a pot of boiling hot water for about 7-8 minutes.
Heat a skillet, add the oil and pan fry the edamame on high heat for 4-5 minutes or until they start to turn slightly brown.
Now add the chili flakes, garlic powder, pepper, salt and soy sauce. Toss well.
Sauté this for a few more minutes, take off heat and serve!
Notes
To balance out the heat in the dish and to lend it a bit of sweetness, you can also add a teaspoon of honey, maple syrup or agave into the skillet towards the end, after you have taken it off heat.
To quicken it up, spoon some chili garlic oil over the edamame while it is still in the skillet and toss well.
You can also sprinkle some sesame seeds or crushed toasted peanuts over the finished dish to lend it a bit of a nutty flavor.
Throw in other veggies like broccoli, asparagus, carrots, mushrooms, baby corn and bell peppers to the skillet along with the edamame if you want it to be a mixed vegetable medley.
Want the dish to have that umami deliciousness? Add a dash of oyster sauce into the mix.
